There are few places more sacred than the grave - that final home where everything is revealed, laid bare, torn apart by the elements and, sometimes, by our own hands. Do we explore the cold, dark home of the dead because we long to be among them? What greater reward can there be for a meaningless, futile existence? It's only right that we dig deep, turn out the remains of those grinning corpses, to learn all that awaits us in the splendor of the long night.

This shocking collection features eleven stories about death, the grave, and what comes after. A man whose sole function is to quiet down the countryside with his trusty hatchet-hammer. A woman with a strange, grisly vocation for tending the dead. A town that's scheduled for destruction in the most violent and savage terms imaginable.

Diseases of the mind and body are not always what they appear nor do they come in the form we might expect. But it would be a mistake to assume that such afflictions are without purpose. The most unique disorders can result in the most meaningful progress for their victims, even if the end result is death.
